George Bailey (James Stewart), a man on the brink of bankruptcy, contemplates suicide by jumping into a river on Christmas Eve. He has dedicated his entire life to his small town and its people, being a kind, tolerant, reliable, and helpful individual. Despite surviving the Great Depression unscathed, he has had to put his dreams of making money, becoming an architect, and seeing the world on hold. Through his housing and finance company, which he inherited from his father, he has made almost everyone in town a homeowner. However, his acts of kindness clash with the selfish interests of the heartless banker, Henry F. Potter (Lionel Barrymore). Potter is constantly after Bailey. One day, an opportunity presents itself when a significant amount of money from the finance company falls into Potter's hands due to the negligence of Bailey's alcoholic and elderly uncle, Billy Bailey (Thomas Mitchell). An audit reveals the company's deficit, which would lead to bankruptcy and arrest. Faced with this dire situation, Bailey contemplates suicide by jumping into the river. Just as he is about to do so, an angel named Clarence (Henry Travers) is sent to save him from death. The angel grants Bailey's wish to see a world where he was never born. Bailey realizes that this alternate reality is not beautiful at all and understands that people have numerous contributions and acts of kindness in their lives, but they often fail to appreciate them.
